The designs of Pauline van Dongen are featured in a new inspirational book by Bradley Quinn.

Fashion is moving forward more dramatically now than ever before. Fresh dialogues are unfolding between designer and wearer, and radical new styles are taking fashion to extremes. Information technology and new materials are reinventing clothing as we know it, making fashion a potent source of technological and material innovation. Futuristic designs are often inspired by surprising sources: science, climate change, space suits, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering and nanotechnology. In future, some garments will be grown like plants and harvested each season. Many will be 3D printed, and others will be fabricated alongside laptops and computer hardware. Demands for heightened security and greater accountability will make every stage of the garment’s life cycle traceable, made possible by microscopic tags that catalogue each step. Bradley Quinn will survey these areas and many others, charting how fashion will look, perform, be manufactured and purchased in the near future.

Queen Beatrix opened the unique exhibition ‘Dutch Design – House of Orange in Oranienbaum palace. The German palace has recently been restored and shows the work of 160 Dutch designers. Fifty rooms are filled with modern Dutch art and objects from the Royal Archives.
Oranienbaum was build in the 17th century for the Dutch Princess Henriette Catherine of Anhalt-Dessau. De palace and town itself were named after the Princess.

The curator, Nicole Uniquole, about the exhibition: “The palace was a real discovery for many Dutch artists: a classic Dutch castle in the heart of Germany. It is wonderful that the crème de la crème of the Dutch designers are gathered here until the end of this summer.”
One of the designs of Pauline van Dongen is exhibited in the ‘clothing room’; the historical version of the walk-in closet. This is also the room where the jewels were kept. Like her mother Amalia, the Princess would spend a lot of money on these things.

Anne Smelik interviewed me last year for her new (Dutch) book: “Ik, Cyborg”. Anneke Smelik examines the image of the cyborg in science fiction and other forms of popular culture such as advertising, science fiction, from video to computer game, and techno fashion to beauty ideal.

Prof. Anneke Smelik is Professor of Visual Culture at the Katrien van Munster chair at the University of Nijmegen and writes about film, art and fashion in today’s visual culture.

TRANSIT
Future memories

Transit reflects on movement, perspective, change, growth and mutation; all of these elements meeting in a journey of abstract thought. This installation originated from the experience of the fast pace of London’s city life. Floating through the ever moving city triggered ideas about the passage of time and changing surroundings and impressions.
These pieces capture Pauline’s urge to create, experiment with material and to constantly develop.
They represent a passage to a new stage,
leaving an imprint for future memories

‘Dutch Design’ at Oranienbaum Palace

April 26th 2012 till September 30th 2012

In the summer of 2012, Oranienbaum Palace will be hosting an exhibition of contemporary Dutch Design and fashion in combination with historical artefacts from the Dutch Royal Archives. Built for Henriette Catharina, Princess of Anhalt-Dessau, Oranienbaum is part of the heritage of the House of Orange-Nassau. With a major conservation and refurbishment process nearing completion, the palace and its park have been restored to their former grandeur.

The exhibition features work by prominent Dutch designers like Viktor & Rolf, Gijs Bakker, Hella Jongerius, Spijkers & Spijkers, Marcel Wanders, Jan Taminiau, Iris van Herpen, Bibi van der Velden, Ineke Hans, Scholten & Baijings and Piet Hein Eek. However, young up-and-coming talent is also in evidence.

One of the sculptural pieces from the collection ‘Kinetic Landscapes’ of Pauline van Dongen will be exhibited here.
