About Pauline van Dongen
Pauline van Dongen is a design studio that specializes in smart textiles and clothing. The studio, founded in 2010 and based in Arnhem (The Netherlands), develops alternatives for fashion by exploring how technology, like electronics and smart materials, can add new value and meaning to clothing and can enhance the way we experience the world around us. The work arises from a relational understanding of fashion and material-oriented and embodied design approaches. This can be recognized in projects such as the ‘Solar Shirt’, ‘Phototrope’ and ‘Issho’, which received international recognition. The studio operates in a hybrid design research space and facilitates innovation through interdisciplinary collaborations with companies, academia and research centres. Moreover, it enables prototypes to be advanced through to truly wearable, desirable as well as scalable products. Recently, Pauline co-founded the Solar Movement which is initiating the first Solar Biennale in Rotterdam in September 2022, with the aim of exploring the human angle of solar energy and furthering solar design.

Project vacancy
We are looking for design students who are interested in doing a (graduation) project with us. The project is a design research aimed at the development of a smart textile based on solar technology and weaving. The project offers creative freedom and an interdisciplinary environment to learn and experiment within a responsible position.

We are looking for a 4th year bachelor student, master student or recent alumni in industrial design, interaction design, design engineering or similar with in-depth knowledge of designing and developing interactive products and/or materials. Knowledge of and experience with smart textiles and solar technology are a plus. In terms of competences we highly value an open minded and proactive attitude. Someone who is able to work hands-on with materials and machines and in an iterative and reflective manner. Our studio is research oriented and require a structured way of working. We also expect you to combine working independently with constructive teamwork.

Skills & responsibilities
Working within a multidisciplinary team you will deal with the integration of solar technology, circuitry and electronic components into textiles and ultimately into architectural structures. The responsibilities include doing research into available solar technology, electrical circuitry, electrical connection methods and (sustainable) yarns. Developing material samples and product prototypes, testing these and scaling them to an industrial production, developing new techniques and processes, desk research and network activities, documenting the process and creating design reports. The skills we consider relevant for this position include: design research, material exploration, electrical engineering, technology integration, prototype development and testing, social & cultural awareness, good knowledge of Adobe software, great communication and planning skills. Additionally, computational skills (like Arduino/3D design & 3D printing) can be a plus.
