Discover the magic of solar energy!

2022

Continuing our solar explorations, we are now working on a project combining the magic of solar technology with the ancient material of clay.

This summer we are hosting community workshops with Bureau Ruimtekoers in Arnhem, inviting participants to create their own ceramic solar tiles to be used as coasters. These ceramic coasters contain a solar panel and a light to festively illuminate your drink in the summer. During the making process, we will contemplate together our current and future relationships with the sun and with solar energy.

Special thanks to the “Stroomversneller” subsidy by Schakel025, Creatief Atelier ’t Duifje (Arnhem) and Gert van Heck for supporting this project.

The sun is shiningand the date is set!

In June and July you can make your own ZONderzetter! Solar designers Anna Wetzel and Ellen Britton from studio Pauline van Dongen invite you to discover the magic of solar energy in a creative way. Our ZONderzetter (solar coaster) workshop series with Bureau Ruimtekoers will start on June 25th in Arnhem Zuid.

During the first workshop on June 25, we will make and decorate the coaster. Then the coasters go into the oven. During the second workshop on July 9 we will paint the coaster with glaze. Then it’s just a matter of waiting. On July 16, we will install the solar cells in the coaster and toast to the sun together!

The workshops will take place from 13.30 to 16.00 on Saturday 25 June and Saturday 9 July at the Bruishuis in Arnhem.

Crafting rituals with the sun

The idea for the solar coasters originated from the garden at the Bruishuis in Arnhem Zuid. That place got us thinking: What brings people together, what supports personal and cultural rituals, like drinking tea, and what are tangible elements in it? That’s how we came up with the solar coaster. It suits a cozy get-together, drinking a festively illuminated drink together. It is playful and gives energy. And you can take the coaster with you and put it on your living room table or windowsill at home to recharge.

At Pauline van Dongen we design and develop smart textiles and clothing in a holistic way. We believe in sharing our experiences and knowledge with others to jointly change the current fashion system that relies on unethical and unsustainable practices and causes devaluation of clothing.
